You still feel the familiar brace in your body when someone needs something from you. You still leave conversations wondering why you didn't speak up, or why you did, or why nothing seems to land the way you intend it to. The knowing hasn't become the living.

That gap — between what you understand and what you can actually feel your way through — is what I write about here.

I'm writing for the person who has been high-functioning their whole life and is quietly exhausted by it. The one who takes care of everyone and has only recently started to wonder who takes care of them. The one who finds it easier to feel other people's feelings than their own. The one who, somewhere along the way, learned that their needs were too much, or not enough, or simply beside the point.

I'm writing for the person who has done significant intellectual and emotional work and still can't figure out why they feel nothing in their body, or why they can't stop a pattern they can see coming from a mile away. The person who is tired of understanding themselves and ready to actually change.

I'm writing for the person who is spiritually curious but done with dogma. Who wants depth without performance. Who suspects that their body has been trying to tell them something for a long time, and is finally ready to listen.

I know this person because I was this person. I spent years being very good at looking okay — performing belonging, managing the surface of things, living from the outside in. The path back into my body was not graceful and it was not quick. But it was the most real thing I have ever done.

What I share here is what I wish I had read at the beginning of that path. The things I had to learn the hard way, that turned out to be learnable. The frameworks that didn't just make sense but actually helped. The truth that the body holds, if you're willing to slow down enough to hear it.

I'm Briana Lynn— a somatic breathwork guide and coach living in Portland, Oregon. I spend my days sitting with people in the tender, sometimes messy work of coming back to themselves. I do this through breathwork, through the body, through honest conversation, and occasionally through saying the thing nobody else has said yet. I work with people in my group program Breath Body Spirit and in one-on-one sessions. This Substack is where I share that work openly — essays, frameworks, reflection prompts, and honest stories about what it actually takes to come home to yourself.

If any of this sounds like you, I'm really glad you're here.

With love,

Briana Lynn

brianalynn.net

If something in this resonated and you're curious about working together — in a group or one-on-one — a free consultation is the place to start.

→ Book a free consultation at brianalynn.net

When Psychedelics Disrupt Instead of Heal

Why some journeys crack us open too quickly—and how to care for your nervous system before and after the medicine.

Briana Lynn Cerezo

What if your “bad trip” wasn’t bad at all—just too much, too fast?

Thanks for reading! And they absolutely can.

But what we don’t hear enough is this: sometimes psychedelics bring up more than we’re ready to handle. Not because we’re doing it wrong or not trying hard enough—but because our nervous systems need safety and support to process deep emotional material.

When we skip that part, things can go sideways.

Not Just a “Bad Trip”—But a Body Doing Its Best

If you’ve ever come out of a journey feeling overwhelmed, fragmented, or like something inside you broke open in a way that didn’t settle back down, you’re not alone.

What looks like a “bad trip” is often just a part of you—maybe one that holds old pain, fear, or unmet needs—surfacing faster than your system could integrate. Psychedelics lower the brain’s usual filters and dissolve inner defenses. And if those defenses were holding back trauma or big emotions, they can come rushing in all at once.

That can look like:

Feeling confused or disoriented for days or weeks

Panic, emotional flooding, or body memories resurfacing

A sense that something sacred cracked open—but you don’t know how to put yourself back together

None of this means you’re broken. It means your body did what it needed to survive. It just didn’t have the tools or support to hold what showed up.

Psychedelics Don’t Heal Us—Integration Does

Medicine journeys with psilocybin, ayahuasca or other entheogens can be expansive and life-changing. But it’s a Western-minded myth that the medicine is a quick fix and does all our healing on its own.

The lasting transformation is a process that keeps happening after the ceremony—in the days, weeks, and even months that follow. That’s when the insights start to land (or not), and when we most need support to make sense of what surfaced.

And here’s the thing: healing doesn’t always mean “feeling better.” Sometimes it means slowing down, grounding, and learning how to stay present with the parts of you that never got to feel safe before.

That’s what trauma-informed integration is all about.

What I Offer: Support for the Whole You

In my work, I support people who are either preparing for a major life moment (psychedelic experiences, big changes in relationships, work, phases of life, etc)—or trying to land after a big experience that shook things up.

Using breathwork, somatic awareness, and energy healing, I help you reconnect with your body, find your footing, and give space to the parts of you that need care—not bypassing them, but learning how to listen, stay and express.

This might look like:

Breath journeys that help you release gently, not forcefully

Somatic tools to track your body’s “yes” and “no” signals

Energy work to help call your life force back from places it got stuck or scattered

Space to explore what surfaced emotionally, without needing to rush to a solution

It’s not about fixing. It’s about integration—bringing all the pieces of you into relationship again.

If You’re Navigating a Big Experience…

Whether you're planning to work with psychedelics or are feeling a bit discombobulated after a journey or other major event, I want you to know:

You’re not alone. You’re not doing it wrong. And underneath that desire is a story we’ve inherited—one that tells us what’s of the Earth is less than, and what’s of the heavens is better.

This story didn’t start with us. It runs deep through Christianity and Western culture as a whole, where salvation is imagined as rising up into a better realm (heaven), and the body—along with its dirt, desire, blood, rage, and grief—is seen as something to overcome.

Even in modern healing spaces, this shows up:

“Raise your vibration.”

“Be the bigger person.”

“Transcend your ego.”

“Just let it go.”

These phrases can seem harmless or even helpful. But when we follow them without listening to the wisdom of the body, we risk bypassing the very material we’re here to transform.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Ascension Isn’t Healing. It’s Dissociation.

If we believe the body is gross, shameful, or a liability, we’ll try to think our way into wellness. We’ll chase after mental models of who we should be, rather than allowing ourselves to be who we are, in our full, complex truth.

We might be able to say all the right things—“I forgive,” “I’ve moved on,” “I’m grateful”—but our breath is shallow, our jaw is clenched, and our nervous system is bracing for something it hasn’t yet processed.

This is what happens when healing is mentalized rather than metabolized. And it’s a direct result of the ascension model we’ve absorbed.

Integration begins the moment we stop trying to escape “what’s on our plate” and start sitting with it—honestly, consciously, and in the body.

“The game is to be where you are. Be it honestly and as consciously as you know how. Your entire life is a curriculum. Everything you've got on your plate is where the stuff for your enlightenment is.”

— Ram Dass

A New (Old) Model: Integration

The integration paradigm asks a different question:

What if every part of you belongs?

Instead of trying to rise above pain, integration invites us to be with it. To listen to what our body is holding. To move energy through, not away. To stop splitting ourselves into good and bad, healed and broken, light and dark—and to start weaving wholeness.

Integration means returning to the body as an intelligent place where healing happens. It’s not always pretty or polished. Sometimes it looks like grief on the bathroom floor. Sometimes it sounds like rage finally given permission to speak. But it’s real. It’s honest. And that’s where the healing lives.

What Integration Looks Like

A client begins a breathwork session saying they want to “feel lighter.” By the end, they’re sobbing on the floor, releasing a decade’s worth of rage they never knew they had. They didn’t rise—they rooted. And from that root, a true lightness begins to emerge.

A person in early recovery from disordered eating learns that their symptoms weren’t about food—they were the body’s attempt to reclaim control in a world where they weren’t allowed to say no. Integration means honoring the wisdom in what looks like dysfunction, not shaming it.

In spiritual communities, people begin to move away from language like “good vibes only” and make space for grief rituals, shadow work, and conversations about death, loss, and injustice. These communities become safer—not because they’ve eliminated darkness, but because they’ve embraced it.

Integration isn’t shiny. It’s sacred.

It makes room for contradiction. For discomfort. For the body’s primal, often inconvenient truth.

Coming Down to Earth

This shift isn’t just personal. It’s collective.

The ascension model mirrors the extractive mindset of colonialism and capitalism—dominate the Earth, rise above it, control and perfect it. The integration model aligns more with Indigenous wisdom and ecological consciousness—reciprocity, embodiment, belonging, and cyclical healing.

We don’t need more “high vibe” teachers floating above it all.

We need more humans who are willing to be with their own depth. To root into their body. To hold grief, joy, rage, pleasure, confusion, and clarity all at once — and find the sacred there.

Because that’s what it means to be whole.

That’s what it means to heal.

Thank you for being here.

This is my first Substack post, and it’s the beginning of a new chapter in how I share my work.
